My Tips On Having A Vegan Christmas

It’s nearly Christmas time, my favourite time of the year! This year is very different for me though as it is the first year I will be a vegan at Christmas!

At the beginning of the year when I had made the decision to stay vegan, one of my thoughts was “oh no what the hell am I going to eat on Christmas day?! I’m going to miss out on the salmon, the trifle and the pudding OH NO!” Now I literally laugh at myself for thinking those things because I had no idea back then that I wouldn’t miss those things at all. How could I not miss those things you may wonder? Well, because I don’t have to and neither do you!

Over the last year I have realised just how easy it is to be vegan and how many options there are for making things I used to love with meat and dairy and changing them into something completely plant based and actually LIKING IT MORE!

Maybe you’re already vegan or wanting to make a few swaps to have a slightly healthier and friendlier Christmas dinner. Whatever your reason here are my tips and links to some amazing recipes. (I have not been asked or been paid to  share ANY of these links I just want to share them!)

Tip no 1: The Starters

In our home our starters normally consist of an egg salad and smoked salmon.

The swaps I will be making:

Mayonnaise – Follow Your Heart Veganaise; this is by far the best vegan mayo out there and I have on non-vegan authority that it is just as good if not better than the non-vegan kind. It can be purchased from Sainsburys

Egg – Tofu which will be chopped and cooked in tamari and apple cider and the tiniest pinch of black salt which for some reason tastes like egg!

Salmon – Carrot “WHAT?” I hear you say, if you follow this really easy recipefrom The Happy Pear you will have some ridiculously yummy smoked salmon and cream ‘cheeze’ the big bonus is this is so so so much healthier than fish!

Roast potatoes in goose fat – just swap the goose fat for either dairy free spread like Vitalite or vegetable oil

Yorkshire Puddings – Veganuary have a great recipe for vegan Yorkshires click here and whilst you’re there why not sign up to Veganuary 😉 that’s how I got started!

Pigs in blankets – I was going to use a recipe from Gaz Oakley’s vegan Christmas book but I have also just discovered that Morrisons have launched vegan pigs in blankets this Christmas!

Gravy – Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has a great vegan gravy recipe

Tip no 3: The dessert

I don’t know about you but our family have a lovely Christmas pudding with brandy cream and homemade trifle for our dessert

Christmas pudding – For this years pudding i have already made it using the recipe in Gaz Oakleys vegan Christmas book, so I can’t share that one with you but I have found another good recipe to share with you from BBC Food, click here

Brandy cream – I’m going to Oatly’s creme fraiche and you could always add a little brandy to it for that extra flavour, but only a little or it’ll get too runny.

Trifle – I am going to try a few of my own vegan trifle recipes over the next few weeks but in the mean time this one looks pretty good from Great British chefs
